About Parking Meters
The first parking meters began accepting coins in Oklahoma City, OK, in 1935 to create turnover and promote business.
Since their original installation, parking meters have, in some form or another, played a vital role in facilitating traffic management, promoting local businesses, and mitigating pollution.
By limiting the time that a vehicle may park in a particular space, a properly priced meter allows for increased turnover and availability, making locations served by meters more popular.
Hourly parking meter rates in Indianapolis have not changed for more than three decades. Consequently, rates have not kept pace with the price of off-street parking, and the demand for on-street parking has grown at a faster pace than supply.
